Reduce your suffering with some simple expert tips (or What a Sports Injury Specialist Masseur can do for you)Up to 80% of us will suffer with back pain at some point in our life. It's the second highest cause for seeking medical advice in the UK, falling just behind the common cold. When you factor in the five million working days lost annually as a result of back pain, the charity Back Care estimates it costs the UK around £5 billion every year.Understanding why it occurs - and how you can keep your back in good shape - can help to reduce your risk of suffering. That's why we asked a leading osteopath to share his 25 years of experience in helping tens of thousands of patients find relief: What's the main cause of back problems? The leading cause is sedentary living. We spend long periods of time sitting at desks and computers, watching TV, driving cars and generally being less active. Yet the human spine is a complex piece of engineering which is designed to be active. Prolonged sitting places our spinal discs under strain. The discs are like shock absorbers between our vertebrae and have a 'jelly like' substance inside them. A slumped sitting posture, which reverses the natural curve of the lower back, can increase disc pressure by as much as 190%. What about decreasing fitness levels? If you live an inactive life with a sedentary job, it goes without saying that your overall body function will suffer. With little movement or exercise, your muscles become less flexible and your joints can get stiff. Spinal muscles will not only shorten and tighten, but also waste, which is known as muscle atrophy. The result is less ability to control and maintain body position, co-ordinate movements and maintain the natural 'S'-shape of the spine. All these factors increase the likelihood of injury to your spine. Does our posture play a big role? The way you hold your body is probably the most important factor in determining the health of your back. Poor posture will gradually weaken your back and result in pain. Good posture is achieved by maintaining the S-shape of the spine, both in a sitting or standing position. When the spine is in the S-shaped position, the centre of gravity is located in the mid-line or neutral location. In other words, the weight of your body is distributed equally along the length of the spine. In this position, the muscles in the front and back of the body are well toned, but relaxed. A poor slumped or 'C'-shaped posture (particularly in sitting), will weaken the spinal discs, stretch ligaments and joints, tighten muscles and eventually cause pain. What's key to the management and prevention of back pain?Firstly, if you develop acute back pain, it is always advisable to consult a medical expert such as an Osteopath, Registered Physiotherapist or your GP. There are simple clinical tests that can be done that clearly identify whether the back pain you are suffering from is of a serious nature or just a simple mechanical problem. For simple mechanical issues, a Sports Injury Specialist Masseur can often correct the initial problem through manipulation of soft tissues and mobilisation, using such techniques as Integrated Myofascial Release Therapy, Trigger Point Pain Release, Lymphatic Drainage or Mechanical Massagers, etc. and then outline a more long-term approach for you to follow which provides a preventative aspect to the treatment. This may include an exercise regime, palates / core stability recommendations, postural changes, work-station advice and any other lifestyle changes that can positively benefit you.Working at an ergonomically designed work station with a chair that provides low back support and arm supports can also help to maintain a healthier spine and relieve your back pain.
